Visual Design - Curved Surfaces

Monday 25th January 2016

Jordu Schell Creature

I could not make it to todays lesson however I tried my best to complete the task from home. We were given a photo of a creature that Jordu Schell had drawn and we were asked to shade and light the piece correctly after watching a short video that gave us some information on how to do so. Im quite happy with how the shade and light is on the piece and I think it works well.

Fish and Steampunk

In class we were asked to produce some concept sketches of fish creatures. I searched for images for inspiration and then drew 3 designs I believe my designs got better as I went on and am happy with my final design as I spent the longest on this one. For our 2 week homework assignment we were given the task of creating a character, machine, device or vehicle that was in the style of steampunk. I initially intended to create some special goggles and sketched out a design for them however after looking through my past files I realised I'd created a steampunk based character in college and I never actually used it for anything in my work so I brought it into photoshop and edited the proportions slightly to be more accurate and then coloured and added various bits to the drawing. I found it difficult to create a decent looking face on the woman and after many attempts to produce something of high quality I decided to just add in a mask to cover my mistakes instead (As it was the lips and nose that made the character look odd). I'm relatively happy with what I managed to create.

Visual Design - Paintover Techniques

Ship and Vampire

We were given the files for a basic 3D modelled turret photo and a sci fi panel texture. We used the warp, transform and distort tools on photoshop to place the textures onto the turret and then added in a background and some highlights onto the image to make it look a little more realistic. We were also given a photo of a vampire-like creature and asked to paint over this too. I decided to do quite a minimalistic design on my vampire, adding in a skin texture, some wounds and blood and then some eyes. I also added in a glow to the background as well as around the eyes.

Life Drawing - Session 14

Life Drawing - Session 14

We had a new model today with a slightly different body shape compared to the previous models. We started with the usual 6 fast drawings and then moved on to focus on light and shade cast on the model. We were asked to draw what shade we saw on the model first off and I was fairly content with the piece I managed to produce. We then closed the blinds in the room and used a red light to cast very light and very dark shadows on the model. I found this fairly difficult as my eyesight isn't fantastic in the dark and just tried as best I could to create the shapes of the model I could make out. The blinds were slightly less closed for the second drawing and I found that this improved the quality of my drawing by a fair amount. We then drew the model with the red light and the blinds up and I was fairly happy with the shadows I managed to create on the model however I realise the proportions were slightly off

Life Drawing - Session 13

We started with 5 quick drawings of the model and then moded onto 2 very long pieces in which we were asked to use a media of our choice or ink and to focus on creating as many shades as necessary to make the piece accurately lit. It was my first time using ink and the paper I used wasn't very suitable however, when the piece dried I think it worked out fairly well even if I was skeptical about it looking ok during the process. I think I also managed to capture a lot of shade and light within the piece. To finish up the class we were asked to draw the models feet in various different poses, I found some positions a lot easier than others to accurately draw.

Life Drawing - Session 12

Today we drew our less regular model 4 times in short periods of time using the media of pencil to start the lesson. The poses were a lot more complex than those of the usual models but it was a refreshing challenge and I enjoyed it a fair amount. We went on to draw the model out in full and label the muscles in the body following our work assigned in visual design. the last task we were given was to draw the hands of the model or our own hands. I drew the models hand that I could see and I think I managed to correctly draw the shape and add in some shadows that work quite well for my first time focusing on this part of the body.

Life Drawing - Session 11

We started with 5 short drawings to warm up and I was pleased with the middle drawing I produced, mostly with the shading and texture I managed to create in the cloth I drew. We then went onto produce a gestural drawing, I'm really not fond of this style of drawing however, compared to my past drawings using this technique I feel as though I've improved if not only slightly. We then moved on to draw the Model twice more, trying to include the chair within the piece. To finish the lesson we drew the models face from different angles, I'm fairly happy with what I managed to create seeing as its our first time drawing faces, however I feel I could improve by focusing more on the shape and texture of the skin, perhaps.

Life Drawing - Session 10

Life Drawing - Session 10

In today's session we drew the model in five short poses and then moved onto drawing the model in full for a longer period of time. Once we'd completed this drawing we labeled the model which linked into our visual design work as we were looking at the skeleton and bones within our bodies. We then drew the model again and then drew three close ups of parts of the model. I think the close up images I drew work very well and I'm happy with the shading I managed to create and the detail of the moles on the models body.

Life Drawing - Session 9

Today we began with 4 quick drawings of the model and then moved onto larger longer drawings, attempting to capture shadow and light on the model. We then moved on to drawing a close up part of the model and I think this worked quite nicely for me. Finally we chose a media ourselves to draw the model in full focusing again, like last session, on capturing some of the chair within the image.

Life Drawing - Session 08

Wednesday 18th November 2015

Life Drawing - Session 8

Todays session entailed 5 short drawings as practise and then 3 longer drawings where we were asked to roughly draw the model and focus on the chair he was sat on. I think I managed to draw the chair slightly better each time and found the technique of looking at the shapes around the object to draw it very useful to produce accuracy. We then sat on the floor and drew the model looking up at him, this was to create the feel of a taller person, perspective wise. I found this fairly difficult to grasp, especially focusing on making the models head smaller and the rest of his body gradually larger.

Life Drawing - Session 07

Life Drawing - Session 7

In this session we started with short drawings of the model and then moved onto some perspective work, that linked in with the work we're doing in our visual design classes. The perspective work included having to draw the model in full and then draw in 4 sheets of paper that were on the ground around him, using perspective correctly so that the image stood out and looked more 3D. I found the perspective drawings fairly difficult but I believe I got better on the second drawing. The next task we were set was to draw the models outline and then focus on the background, I found it difficult to draw the model correctly proportioned and as there were many easels in the background of my image it was also difficult to accurately draw them. However choosing to use biro for the second image I produced, I believe I'd improved slightly.
